Here’s a quick post to highlight one of our favorite foods: ice cream.
We have a pretty good generic homemade ice cream recipe, and it’s easily adaptable to fit the season (there is no off-season for ice cream) or whatever ingredients you have on hand.
This iteration, a vanilla chai pear ice cream, is a great one for winter, and the combination of fruit and spices will leave you feeling a little fancier than if you were eating a plain chocolate.
Vanilla chai pear ice cream requires a bit more planning because it has to steep, but it’s just as easy to put together as any other flavor.
The basic process is straightforward: gently heat some cream, toss in a peeled and sliced pear and a couple of chai tea bags, and let it steep over very low heat for an hour or so.
Add in some vanilla and sugar, and let it cool.
Pop the slurry into an ice cream maker and let it freeze.
Ingredients
- 3 cups heavy cream (or half and half)
- 1 ripe pear, peeled, cored, and cut into chunks
- 2 bags of chai tea
- 1 tsp vanilla extract, or the scrapings from a vanilla bean
- 1/2 cup sugar
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the cream, pear and tea.
- Over very low heat (just steaming, no simmer), let it steep for an hour, until the cream is fragrant and the pear falls apart.
- Pour into a large bowl and stir in the vanilla and sugar. Put the bowl in the fridge until cold, maybe 20-30 minutes.
- Pour the mix into an ice cream maker and process according to the instructions.
