Everyone Starts At The Beginning...
I (and every other gardener) was once right where you are.
No idea where to start, and no experience to speak of. What should I plant? Where? How much water does this need? Should I fertilize? Which end is up? Why are the leaves turning yellow?
But I got my hands dirty, read every gardening book I could find, and learned a lot through trial and error. This book is the culmination of those years of experience.
I've made mistakes. I've tried some things that work and many that don't. I've grown countless varieties of vegetables; some that are keepers and some that aren't worth the dirt you grow them in. And I want you to succeed without having to make the same mistakes I did.
If you're looking to start a garden, this book gives you five of the easiest, any-brown-thumb-can-grow-them vegetables and tells you what to do to keep them alive and happy, because really, that's all we're after, isn't it? I don't grow roses for show; I grow food to eat.
And I try to keep things simple - if you're looking for an encyclopedia, this is not the book for you. Easy-to-understand and straight to the point, because I know everyone is short on time.
Nobody can answer all your questions; some things you'll still have to figure out through your own experience. But that's part of the fun of starting your own garden - there's no one-size-fits-all approach. You may take bits and pieces from others, but the end result is an entirely unique creation.
A Focus on the Natural
I don't like using chemicals. If you're looking for a tutorial on how and how often to apply glysophate or chlorpyrifos (hint: never), you'll have to go to your local Ag Extension; I don't discuss them in the book.
Instead of -cides, I focus on a more holistic approach: build the plants up, starting with good soil. Healthy, robust plants are more productive, require less maintenance, and are naturally better-equipped to fight off insects and disease. Aside from the obvious fact that I'd rather not spray the food that I'm going to feed to my kids, I want to leave the land better off than it was when I started, and not a dead zone.
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we'll run into a stubborn bug infestation or a nasty case of wilt. Even in these instances, there are many non-toxic options. You probably won't get the instantaneous effect of a poison, but it will likely end up better in the long run, as your plants and the immediate environment learn to adapt. Besides, what's more satisfying, squashing a Japanese beetle between your fingers or going scorched-earth and killing them (and any other insect, good or bad) with a spray?
