    DIY All-Natural Weed Killer

    Although weeds are different things to different people, one thing is universal: if it’s a weed, you probably don’t want it around. I’m not super concerned about eliminating every weed, especially since many of them are actually beneficial. But I prefer that they stay out of the garden and out of the patio cracks.

    Unfortunately, commercial herbicides are quite nasty. Glysophate (Roundup) is a particularly hot-button topic, as you’ve no doubt heard since all of these Roundup lawsuits started popping up. And while others aren’t getting the recent press, they’re no less worrisome. So if I can find a natural weed killer that works, and I can spray it while the kids are right next to me, I’m all in.

    How To Grow Garlic

    Although now is the time of year that we want to throw in the trowel and wash our dirty hands one final time, there’s still more to be done in the garden. At least if you want to grow your own garlic. Planting this late seems crazy, but this is key in how to grow garlic successfully.

    If you live in a locale that has an actual winter, getting your garlic in the ground before the onset of the cold weather is crucial for a good harvest the following summer.

  • Plated Landscape 2017: Ohio City Farm and Refugee Response

    In what has turned into an annual tradition (six years running now!), we recently had the opportunity to attend a Plated Landscape put on by Spice Caterers. These are always one of the highlights of our summer/fall, and as usual, our expectations were exceeded.

    This go-round was different both because of the early timing (June 2) and the location, an urban farm near the banks of the Cuyahoga River in downtown Cleveland. Granted, this is not 300 acres of amber waves of grain, but a farm it is, only nestled behind a large apartment complex.

    Small Space Gardening Tips

    A lot of people seem to have this notion that you can’t really garden unless you have acres of flat land and beautiful soil. That, my friends, is farming.

    If you have access to the sun, some water, and any sort of container that can hold some dirt, you can garden. I guess that may rule out any subterranean readers, but for the rest of you, you’re good to go. Small space gardening is easy, rewarding, and many times, less work than maintaining a larger plot, so don’t let your lack of land deter you!
