Took the little guy out for Halloween, his second, but first as a semi-aware person. Unfortunately, he can’t have much candy with his dairy allergy and lack of molars, but mom and dad will probably be okay with finishing it up. We had nice weather again, too, which is several years in a row now – we’re not going to have nice trick or treating weather forever. All in all, he was a hoot.
If the title didn’t give it away, we went to the zoo last weekend for S’s company picnic. We’re fortunate to live so close to one of the finest zoos in the country, and I’m glad we were able to take advantage of it. I hadn’t been there for years, and I’d forgotten how much fun it could be. C also enjoyed it, though he still seems to think that most animals should bark. He was pretty impressed by the size of the elephants (as was I – I haven’t seen one up close for a long time), and enjoyed the condor that kept coming at us with wings spread wide.
There were a couple new exhibits, including the recently opened Elephant Crossing. As is usually the case, a lot of the animals were just lounging around in the sun, so there wasn’t a whole lot of action. But, you can count on the monkeys to have some entertaining displays. One group included a juvenile monkey that kept bugging the older ones (funny how life imitates nature…), and C really got a kick out of watching them chase each other around. The weather was a pleasant surprise – they were calling for clouds and rain all week, and when we got there, and not a cloud in the sky. Those forecasters never know what they’re talking about…
While the weather was decent over the weekend, we stopped for a late lunch/early dinner at My Thai, a cute little restaurant about three miles up the road in Chesterland. They’ve been there for a couple years and we’ve been meaning to try it, but haven’t made it until now. I’m glad we finally did.
We brought the little monster C along with us (okay, monster is probably overdoing it – he’s still pretty good, and I’ve seen much worse), which can be a hit or miss proposition. The staff was very accommodating, helping us find something for him to eat and fawning over how cute he was (which he already takes advantage of – for a one-year-old, he’s very manipulative). He spent much of the time either pulling food out of his mouth or trying to escape from the high chair. Needless to say, he was not terribly cooperative. Fortunately for him, he’s still at an age where he can just flash a smile, and the older couple at the next table won’t mind that he’s yelling for more Veggie Straws, they’ll just focus on his adorableness.
But enough about that. The food is your standard Thai fare – curries, noodles, stir-fries, etc. We started with the chicken satay (for C, though he didn’t eat much of it) and the Coconut Soup with vegetables. The chicken was done up with some curry spices and grilled, and the peanut sauce was excellent. Also, the cucumber salad that came with it was very good, with a bit of a sweet dressing on it. The soup was creamy and flavorful, and loaded with veggie chunks. Among the veggies were lots of green onions, which apparently left a lasting impression on my breath for a couple days… didn’t bother me though 🙂
For dinner, S got her standard peanut curry (she likes peanut sauce at Asian places) with chicken. Peanuty but not overpowering, and nice and thick to stick to the veggies and rice. I got a red curry with seafood – a bunch of vegetables and a red curry paste with coconut milk. It had just a touch of zing to it, which I enjoyed, and a good mix of flavors. Most of the entrees come with your choice of meats or tofu (with the seafood being a dollar or two extra), and with a wide variety of options, you should be able to find something that suits your tastes.
Nothing overly fancy about My Thai, but it’s local, the food is excellent, and the servers were all very friendly and helpful. That’s three plusses in my book.

I took another day off to enjoy the nice fall weather (and get some stuff done), and we also made plans to visit an orchard with C. So that afternoon, we headed over to Eddy Fruit Farm, which is owned by some friends of the family. It did turn out to be a perfect fall day, which can be rare, as evidenced by the forecast for the rest of this week. But we all had fun, we picked grapes and apples, and C got to munch on some while we walked, so he was happy. It doesn’t get much more fall-ish than going out to pick apples 🙂
This weekend was fair weekend for our county (and many others across the state). The weather was a little iffy, but we all toughed it out and went Sunday afternoon. After, I should mention, C took a three-hour nap. It sprinkled a few times while we were there, and was unseasonably cool, but we had a good time. This was actually C’s second fair – we took him last year when he was a week old (good parenting decision?), and he slept the entire time. This time he stayed awake the entire time, and was much more interested in what was going on. He enjoyed most of the animals, was a little shy about touching them, and would laugh when he did – everything’s a dog to him though. Maybe next year we’ll be able to make that distinction.
