Distractions

While C was trying to help me plant tomato seeds on Sunday, S stepped in to distract him with a new project – the peanut-butter smeared, birdseed-covered cardboard tube. I think every kid ends up doing these in school or something, but we’re starting early, mostly because he needs new distractions all the time.

It went as expected – messy. He definitely ate as much peanut butter as he smeared, and may have eaten some birdseed too, but I wasn’t watching that closely. It’s all stuff we’d eat anyway. But as long as he had fun (and left me alone long enough to finish planting), well, that’s what matters, right?

Why, exactly, did we give a 2 1/2 year old a bowl of peanut butter and a pan full of bird seed?
